Surprise Me!

We all like surprises; don't we? Isn't that what gets us out of bed each and every morning - the prospect of a new day and all that comes with it, everything from the planned and expected to those happenstance events that bring the most totally unexpected, and sometimes, exciting moments? It's the not knowing. If we did know what was round the corner then life would be that little bit duller, that little bit more mundane. I'm a bit sad, I know, but I won't even look at Nick Heyward's set list that somebody liberated from the stage in Birmingham the other night - I'm seeing him this Friday and don't want to know what he's gonna start and end with, or even play for an encore; of course I've got a bloody good idea, but you know what I mean?

Radio presenters who herald at the top of the show what they'll be playing over the next two hours. Why? The joy of listening to the live radio, surely, is, again, not knowing what's coming next. And don't get me started on movie trailers (aka plot spoilers) - especially grating when you'll be watching the film only days later.

As they used to say on the Saturday night news, just before Match of the Day came on: "If you don't want to know the scores, look away now."

  1. I've noticed that radio presenters increasingly 'throw forward' these days and wondered the same thing - why? A simple overview of what's coming up on the programme serves to whet the appetite, whereas a blow by blow account is more likely to make me switch off.
Enjoy Nick. I hope he still does 'Take That Situation'.

    1. TS - It's a case of tune in 5 minutes late, or fingers in the ears singing 'la la la.' A first world problem I grant you, but it bugs the f*ck out of me.

Report on Heyward to follow. But, yes, 'Take That Situation' is pop gold - I bought it on 12" and remember it had a shiny red sleeve and not much writing on it. I really do need to get out more.

  2. "those happenstance events that bring the most totally unexpected, and sometimes, exciting moments?" - What a great way of thinking so why as adults do we sometimes (usually) lose that exuberance about greeting each day. Little kids can't wait to get up in the morning - Must take a leaf out of your book. Enjoy the show.

Btw - I get really annoyed with TV dramas nowadays that always show you a summary of what is to happen in the next episode - A mad scramble for the remote as best to just wait and see, be surprised.

    1. Don't get me wrong Alyson, I don't spring out of bed every morning and do cartwheels across the landing! But I do know you've gotta be in it to win it; whatever *it* is. Full report on Nick Heyward + Pugwash to follow.

  3. Ok, so I got up today with this new attitude and you know what, all sorts of good things have happened, and unexpected surprising things at that. Will try and sustain it but not always easy - As we all know, shit happens, it's just how we deal with it.
