Chapeau

The three tickets for last night's Supersuckers gig at The Rescue Rooms had been sitting in my phone for weeks. As soon as I saw they were doing a few UK dates I grabbed 'em quick. And so, on what turned out to be one of the wettest nights of the year, Steve, Neil and yours truly aquaplaned to the venue, and after a few beers and a catch up, made our way to the stage. Showtime.

The band's lineup may have changed (multiple times) in the thirty something years they've been going but singer and bass-man Eddie Spaghetti has remained constant. His trademark cowboy hat never* leaves his head all night and the band play a rabble rousing set that rarely falls below 100mph; though as you can see from the clip below, sometimes they can drop a gear (Coattail Rider normally sounds like this) and sometimes they play acoustic (sometimes they even go full on country). But whatever the lineup, whatever means of amplification are to hand and whatever head gear is or isn't worn the Supersuckers remain The Greatest Rock and Roll Band In the World.

  1. I got a song by Supersuckers on a free cd many years called I Want The Drugs. It was one of the most rock n roll songs in existance.

    1. The ooze rock and roll from every pore. More Lemmy than Lemmy, more Keef than Keef. Everyone should go and see the at least once in their lifetime.

  2. Supersuckers is a name I haven't heard in a long time, so long in fact that I had to head over to Wikipedia to remind me exactly when I last clapped ears on them. By my reckoning they left my orbit after their 1997 waxing 'Must've Been High'. That is a very long time ago. Good to hear that they're still out there - it sounds like you had a cracking night out.

    1. Yes, 'Must Have Been High' was a high watermark for the band. It's the album that got me into them when I was in America in 1998. As I said to Adam in the comments above, if you haven't seen them live yet than you really should.

  3. I had completely forgotten Supersuckers until now too... but then hearing Coat Tail Rider brought back memories of hearing them eons ago in the Sub Pop heyday. Fab stuff. Love the stripped down version of the song and then got a rush of adrenaline hearing the original once more. Great that you got to see them again.

    1. As good as they were, and they were, they weren't as frenetic (and frantic) as I remember; they still had their old guitarist with thim when I last saw them - the one who used to comb his hair all the time with a giant oversized pink comb. (The things you remember.)
