I think it was only when I saw Johnny Marr play his own version of How Soon is Now that I realised a song (a band, even) that I'd never much cared for has in fact got a stunning intro. I'm sure if I thought long enough and hard enough I could come up with a few more examples of this genre. But as I've just alienated all my Smiths loving readers I think I'll quit while I'm behind - for fear of inadvertently slaughtering another scared cow.
Johnny Marr - How Soon is Now

I loved the song from start to finish, but that intro was something else. My teenage brain couldn’t work out how you could those sounds from a guitar. My addled adult brain still hasn’t quite grasped it!
ReplyDeleteAnd the ultimate expression of impressive intro followed by underwhelming song surely has to be Spaceman by Babylon Zoo, doesn’t it?!
Good call! The impressive intro/underwhelming playlist would probably fill up sooner than you'd imagine.
DeleteBang average? You're about three weeks too late for an April Fool, John.
ReplyDeleteThat's what I said, Martin! Suboptimal.
DeleteDire Straits ‘Money For Nothing’ starts off promisingly thanks to Sting (the album version more so) but then Mark Knopfler joins in and that’s when I turn it off……
ReplyDeleteYou're getting the hang of it, Coops! I always preferred latter day Knopfler, myself. The 'headband years' did nobody any favours.
