Nottingham Swing

In the same way I like to support local musicians so do I try to get behind local writers and, indeed, local publishers: founded in 2023, Another Small Press are an independent publisher based up the road in Newark. They champion local writers across many genres, fiction and non-fiction, and already have an extremely impressive back catalogue. I was in that neck of the woods recently and came away with a short story collection from the pen of Lynn Roulstone. Feel free to browse their wares and, if you can spare a few bob, why not chuck one of their titles in your digital basket. It can be your good deed for the day!

A lighthouse; or two

"What time are you on tonight?", I asked her in the pub. "We're on at half eight, but Tim's on at half seven - he's really good, I think you'll like him." So said Rachel Unthank when I saw her in the Prince Rupert, just round the corner from the Palace Theatre on Friday evening. She'd just sound-checked and was with her sister Becky and the rest of the entourage having their tea.

I'm sure I'll wax lyrical about the headliners (and my chance meeting with an Unthank) - I may link to my gig review in the local rag. I might even post the photo of me and Rachel.

But, for now, I'm just gonna put this up here: I did get to the venue for half seven. I did see Tim. And, yes, he is really good. Thanks for the heads up, Rachel.

Used to could

© John Medd 2016
It's sad to see what's become of the Robin Hood Hotel in Newark. I used to could have a drink in there at lunchtime; many moons ago when I was holed up in the building opposite, and when the concept of a pie and a pint in the middle of the working day was considered the norm - encouraged even. Oh God, I hope that doesn't make me sound like Nigel F***ge.

Kudos (1989-1990)
